Know all men by these presents that I Margaret Rose alias
Smithers as principal and Derrick A January
as security are held and firmly bound unto the state, of
Mifsouri in the just and full sum of four hundred
dollars that is to say the said Margaret in the sum
of two hundred dollars & the said
in the sum of two hundred dollars for the true payment of
which said sum of money we bind ourselves one and
each of our heirs executors administrators and afsigns
jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with
our seals and dated this fourth day of May in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and
forty three. The condition of the above obligation
is such that whereas the said Margaret has this
day obtained from the County of Court of St Louis County
a license to remain in this State under the provis-
ions of an act of the General Afsembly of
the State of Mifsouri entitled "An Act more
effectually to prevent free persons of color
from entering into this State and for other
purposes approved twenty third day of February
in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred & forty three. Now if the said
Margaret shall be of good behavior dur-
ing the continuance of said license then
the above obligation to be void else the same
to be and remain in full force and virtue
