  • Interview with Laverne Barkley conducted for Eyes on the Prize II. Discussion centers on her son, Elliott James "L.D." Barkley who was one of the negotiators during the rebellion and civil unrest at Attica Prison and who was subsequently killed when the prison was retaken.

  • Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the original 16mm negative film were scanned and digitized to create 2K DPX files and the original 1/4" elements were digitized to create 24-bit 96kHz .wav files. The picture and audio were then reassembled at the Film & Media Archive.

  • Laverne Barkley was the mother of Elliot “L.D.” Barkley, a member of the council of prisoners during the Attica uprising of 1971 which detailed the 30 demands of the prisoners to improve conditions inside the penitentiary. The Archive has not found biographical information beyond what was discussed in the interview. Any additional insight would be welcomed at spec@wumail.wustl.edu.
