                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we <lb/>
                        <persName>Anthony Emerson</persName> and <persName>Elijah Eads</persName> are held <lb/>
                        and firmly bound unto the State of Missouri <lb/>
                        each in the sum of two hundred dollars <lb/>
                        for the true payment of which we bind <lb/>
                        ourselves our heirs executors and administrators <lb/>
                        firmly by these presents sealed with our seals <lb/>
                        this <date when="1843-05-03">3<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> day of May in the year 1843</date>
                    </p>
                    <p>Now the condition of the above obligation is <lb/>
                        such that whereas the County Court for the <lb/>
                        County of St Louis and State of Missouri has <lb/>
                        this day granted to <persName>Anthony Emerson</persName> a free <lb/>
                        man of color a license to reside in the State <lb/>
                        of Missouri. Now if the said <persName>Anthony Em- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        erson</persName> shall properly demean himself and <lb/>
                        continue and be of good behavior then this <lb/>
                        obligation to be null and void otherwise to <lb/>
                        remain in full force and virtue
