                    <p>In the Circuit Court<lb/>
                    March Term 1842<lb/>
                        <persName>Willis G. Shackleford</persName> presented<lb/>
                    for proof a deed of Emancipation from <persName>Janus<lb/>
                        Hays</persName> to <persName>Mary</persName> and <persName>Rhoda</persName> two negro slaves which<lb/>
                    did by order of the Court is spread upon<lb/>
                    the Record as follows- "Know all men by<lb/>
                        these presents that I <persName>Janus Hays</persName> of the County<lb/>
                    of Montgomery and the state of Missouri for and<lb/>
                    in consideration of the services and attention<lb/>
                        rendered me by my two slaves <persName>Mary</persName> and<lb/>
                        <persName>Rhoda</persName> (the former aged about thirty eight <lb/>
                    years last July and the latter aged twenty<lb/>
                    three years last October) and the further con<lb/>
                    =sideration of the sum of sixty dollar to<lb/>
                        me in hand paid by the said <persName>Mary</persName> and<lb/>
                        <persName>Rhoda</persName> the receipt of which I do hereby ac<lb/>
                    knowledge have and by these presents do<lb/>
                    discharge release set free + entirely acquit<lb/>
                        the said <persName>Mary</persName> + <persName>Rhoda</persName> from all service <lb/>
                    obedience or control of myself my heirs<lb/>
                    +c. forever hereby surrendering all right<lb/>
                        and title to or in the said <persName>Mary</persName> + <persName>Rhoda</persName><lb/>
                    any law or usage to the contrary not with<lb/>
                    =standing intending and declaring<lb/>
                    this instrument to operate as a perfect and<lb/>
                    of emancipation. In writing, whereof I have<lb/>
                    hereunto subscribe my name and affix<lb/>
                    my seal this 7th day of January A.D 1842</p>

                          to the said deed appeared in Court and being<lb/>
                          duly sworn upon their oath say that the said<lb/>
                              <persName>Janus Hays</persName> signed said and in their pre<lb/>
                          =sence and acknowledge the same to be<lb/>
                          his act and deed for the purpose therein<lb/>
                          mentioned and that at his request they sub<lb/>
                          scribed their names to said and as Witnesses"</p>

                          County aforesaid certify the foregoing to b a true copy from the record of said Court at <lb/>

                          In Witness whereof I have here<lb/>
                          unto set my hand and affixed<lb/>
                              the seal of said court at <unclear unit="words" quantity="1"/><lb/>
                              in the Town of Danville the <lb/>
                              <date when="1842-03-12">12th day of March in the year of our Lord 1842</date>.</p>
