               <p>That in the spring of the year <date when="1837">1837</date> or <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">

               <p>Your petitioner respectfully represents that he<lb/> is a free person of color, and as such, is entitled to<lb/> his freedom for the reasons herein after following to wit</p>
               <p>That in the spring of the year <date when="1850">1850</date> your petitioner was the slave<lb/> of a man named <persName>

               <p>The Defendant comes<lb/> &amp; declares to the Plaintiff's Petition<lb/> &amp; says that the same does not<lb/> contain facts sufficient to Entitle<lb/> the Plaintiff to his freedom,<lb/> for causes of <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">

                  </unclear> sets<lb/> down the following:</p>
               <p>1. The fact as alleged in the Plaintiffs<lb/> petition, that the he was taken<lb/> into <persName>

                  </persName> Territory does<lb/> not entitle him to a judgement<lb/> of freedom</p>
               <p>2. This Court cannot take judicial<lb/> notice of the laws of <persName>

                     </choice>
                  </persName>
                  <lb/> the general allegation therefore<lb/> that by the laws of <persName>
                     <choice>

                     </choice>
                  </persName>
                  <lb/> the Plff became &amp; is entitled<lb/> to his freedom is insufficient.</p>
               <p>3. The facts set out on the face of<lb/> the Plaintiffs Petition show<lb/> that the taking of the Plaintiff<lb/> by the Defendant into <persName>

                  </persName>
                  <lb/> was a mere transit of that<lb/> Territory &amp; therefore gives the<lb/> Plaintiff no right of action<lb/> for his freedom.</p>
