                    <p>Know all men by these presents that I <persName>James <lb/>
                    Berry</persName> as principal and <persName>Duncan S. Carter</persName> 
                  <lb/>
                        as security are held and firmly bound <lb/>
                        unto the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> in the just and full <lb/>
                        sum of four hundred dollars that is to say <lb/>
                        the said <persName>James Berry</persName> and <persName>Duncan S. Carter</persName> 
                  <lb/>
                        in the sum of two hundred dollars each for the <lb/>
                        true payment of which we hind ourselves <lb/>
                        one and each of our heirs executors administrators <lb/>
                        and <choice>
                     <orig>afsigns</orig>
                     
                  </choice> jointly and severally firmly by these presents <lb/>
                        sealed with our seals and dated this the <date when="1843-05-03">third <lb/>
                        day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand <lb/>
                        eight hundred and forty three</date>.
                    </p>                   
                    <p>The condition of the above oblig- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        ation is such whereas the said <persName>James Berry</persName> 
                  <lb/>
                        has this day obtained from the County Court of St <lb/>
                        Louis County a license to remain in the state <lb/>
                        under the provisions of an act of the General <lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>Afsembly</orig>
                     
                  </choice> of the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> entitled <lb/>
                        "An Act more effectually to prevent free <lb/>
                        persons of color from entering into this state <lb/>
                        and for other purposes" approved <date when="1843-02-23">February <lb/>
                        the twenty third in the year of our Lord <lb/>
                        one thousand eight hundred and forty three</date>
                    </p>
                    <p>Now if the said <persName>James Berry</persName> 
                  <lb/>
                        shall be of good behavior during the continu- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        ance of said license then the above obligation <lb/>
                        to be void else to be &amp; remain in full <lb/>
                        force and effect.
