                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we <lb/>
                        <persName>Pauline Hanner</persName> as principal and <persName>Charles G <lb/>
                        Chesley</persName> as security are held and firmly bound unto <lb/>
                        the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> as follows the said <persName>Pauline <lb/>
                        Hanner</persName> in the sum of two hundred dollars &amp; <lb/>
                        the said <persName>Charles G. Chesley</persName> in the sum of two <lb/>
                        hundred dollars for the payment thereof <lb/>
                        well &amp; truly to be made we bind ourselves <lb/>
                        our heirs, executors &amp; administrators <lb/>
                        firmly by these presents. Sealed with our <lb/>
                        seals &amp; dated at St Louis this <date when="1844-12-16">sixteenth day <lb/>
                        of December A.D. 1844</date>_
                    </p>
                    <p>The above obligation is such that whereas <lb/>
                        on the <date when="1844-12-16">sixteenth day of December eighteen <lb/>
                        hundred &amp; forty four</date> the County Court of <lb/>
                        St Louis County hath granted a license to the said <persName>Pauline Hanner</persName> a free negro <lb/>
                        woman to remain in the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> 
                  <lb/>
                        in accordance with an act entitled "An <lb/>
                        act more effectually to prevent free persons <lb/>
                        of color from entering into the State &amp; for other <lb/>
                        purposes" Approved <date when="1843-02-23">Feb 23<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> 1843</date>
                    </p>
                    <p>Now if the above bounden <persName>Pauline Hanner</persName> shall well demean &amp; conduct her- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        -self &amp; be of good behaviour during the <lb/>
                        continuance of the said license in the <lb/>
                        State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> then this obligation to be <lb/>
                        void else to remain in full force and <lb/>
                        virtue
