                    <p>Know all men by these presents that I <persName>John <lb/>
                        Fletcher</persName> as principal &amp; <persName>George Welsh</persName> as <lb/>
                        security are held and firmly bound unto the State <lb/>
                        of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> in the just and full sum of four <lb/>
                        hundred dollars <del rend="strikethrough">for</del> that is to say the said <persName>John <lb/>
                        Fletcher</persName> and the said <persName>George Welsh</persName> in the <lb/>
                        sum of two hundred dollars each for the <lb/>
                        full payment of which we bind ourselves and <lb/>
                        our legal representation jointly &amp; severally firmly <lb/>
                        by these presents sealed with our seals and <lb/>
                        dated this <date when="1843-05-04">fourth day of May in the year <lb/>
                        of our Lord one thousand eight hundred <lb/>
                        forty three</date>, The condition of the above obligation <lb/>
                        is such, whereas the said <persName>John Fletcher</persName> 
                  <lb/>
                        has this day obtained from the County Court <lb/>
                        of St Louis County <del rend="strikethrough">Court</del> a license to remain <lb/>
                        in this under the provisions of an act of <lb/>
                        the General <choice>
                     <orig>Afsembly</orig>
                     
                  </choice> of the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> 
                  <lb/>
                        entitled "an act more effectually to prevent <lb/>
                        free persons of color from entering into this State <lb/>
                        and for other purposes approved <date when="1843-02-23">Feb 23 <lb/>
                        1843</date>_ Now if the said <persName>John</persName> shall be <lb/>
                        of good behaviour during the continu- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        ance of said license then the above <lb/>
                        obligation to be void else to be and rem- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        ain in full force &amp; effect
