                  </unclear> further represents, that in the year <date when="1791">1791</date>, <lb/>or there about, your petitioner's mother then being about <lb/>twenty three years of age, was taken by one John stock from <lb/>

                  </unclear> took your petitioner's mother and <lb/>brought her from prairie <unclear rend="written" unit="chars"/>

                  </persName> became the mother of several <lb/>children, amongest whom is your petitioner, born <lb/>about the <date when="1807-12-02">second day of December 1807.</date>

               <p>after the death of said <persName>

                        <orig>Chouteau</orig>
                     </choice>
                  </persName>, your <lb/>petitioner was sold as property belonging to his <lb/>state, and was purchased by one <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">
                     <supplied>Edward</supplied>
                  </unclear> Chouteau <lb/>who subsequently sold your petitioner to and <lb/>
                  <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">
                     <supplied>Therese Cerre</supplied>
                  </unclear> Chouteau, by whom he is now held <lb/>and <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">
                     <supplied>claimed</supplied>
                  </unclear> as a slave in said County.</p>
               <p>now your petitioner claims that he is a <lb/>free man, first became him mother was born face, <lb/>being a native of a British province in which <lb/>slavery was not tolerated, and secondly, because <lb/>if his mother were boun a slave, she become <lb/>by her residence at <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">
                     <supplied>Prairie</supplied>
                  </unclear> Chien a free <lb/>person under the Ordinance of <date when="1787">1787.</date>
