               <p>Ans: I can't just state the number of<lb/> years I have known him. He worked<lb/> for me as fireman on a steamboat<lb/> some six years ago. I knew him before that.<lb/> I am an engineer. Plaintiff has been<lb/> on boats with me since that time.</p>

               <p>Ans: I think<lb/>

               <p>Ans: The boat that he was on six<lb/> years ago was the Colorado, which<lb/> ran between <placeName>

               <p>Ans: My impression was that<lb/> he was a free man <unclear rend="strikethrough" unit="chars"/> because<lb/> he acted for himself. That is my only<lb/> reason for thinking so. He lived in<lb/> the town where I was born &amp; raised<lb/> in a free State.</p>
               <p>Ques: Was he known as a free man?</p>
               <p>Ans: I dont know whether other<lb/> people thought he was a free man<lb/> or a slave. I thought he was a free man<lb/> Further <unclear rend="strikethrough" unit="chars"/> this deponent saith not.</p>
