                  </unclear> woman, respectfully<lb/> represents, that she is now held in slavery in the County<lb/> aforesaid by one John Pitcher - that she <unclear rend="written" unit="chars"/> believes<lb/> that she is entitled to freedom, and she prays the said<lb/> Court for leave to sue, the said Pitcher, as a poor <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">

                  <lb/> in order to establish her right to freedom.</p>
               <p>Your petitioner states, as the ground on which her<lb/> claim to freedom is founded, that about eight years ago, there<lb/> being the slave of Daniel D. Page of <placeName>

                  </placeName> aforesaid<lb/> to the City of Boston in the state of <placeName>

                        <orig>Massachusetts</orig>
                     </choice>
                  </placeName> in the <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">
                     <supplied>spring</supplied>
                  </unclear>
                  <lb/> of the year, the month of May as petitioner believes, and there<lb/> left by said Page as a <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">
                     <supplied>waiter</supplied>
                  </unclear> and servant in <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">
                     <supplied>attendance</supplied>
                  </unclear>
                  <lb/> upon the wife of said Page, who accompanied her said<lb/> husband to <placeName>

                  </placeName> aforesaid - that petitioner remained<lb/> in the said state of <placeName>

                  </placeName> doing service and labor<lb/> there in attendance upon the wife of said Page until some-<lb/>time in the fall of the <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">

                  </unclear> year, the month of October<lb/> petitioner thinks, when your petitioner was brought back<lb/> again to <placeName>

                  </unclear>, who then returned<lb/> home - the petitioner cannot remember with distinctness,<lb/> the year when she was so taken to <placeName>

                  </placeName> and<lb/> there kept as aforesaid, but for greater certainty, she<lb/> states, that it was in the year, that the <unclear rend="written" unit="chars"/> con-<lb/>vent was burnt down at Charleston in said last<lb/> named State, by a mob, and that petitioner being there<lb/> in <placeName>

                  </placeName> saw the conflagration - after petitioner was<lb/> brought back to <placeName>

                  </placeName>, the said Page sold her to said Pitcher<lb/> who now has her in <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">
                     <supplied>posession</supplied>
                  </unclear> &amp; holds her in slavery - Petitioner<lb/> states that slavery is not allowed to existence the state of <placeName>

                        <orig>Massachusetts</orig>
                     </choice>
                  </placeName>,<lb/> and was not permitted when she was so taken there &amp; kept as<lb/> aforesaid and that such a holding her in slavery there, by the laws<lb/> of said State entitled petitioner to freedom. Petitioner <lb/> further states that about ten days ago she applied to<lb/>

        this honorable Court for leave to sue said Pitcher<lb/> for freedom, which was granted, but which said on<lb/> account of some informality in the proceedings, has<lb/> been dismissed, but she states that since the bringing<lb/> of said suit, she has <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">

                  </unclear> treated with great<lb/>

                     <supplied>cruelty</supplied>
