                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we;<lb/>
                    <persName>Mary Johnson</persName> a free negro woman as principal and<lb/>
                        <persName>Frederick R. Courray</persName> as security, both of the City +<lb/>
                    County of St. Louis in the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, in the sum<lb/>
                    of four Hundred Dollars: towit: the said <persName>Mary</persName>
                  <lb/>
                    in the sum of two hundred Dollars + the said <persName>Frederick<lb/>
                        R. Courray</persName> as security; in the sum of Two hundred Dollars<lb/>
                    to the payments of which said sumof money we bind<lb/>
                    ourselves our + each of our heirs executors and adminis-<lb/>
                    trators jointly + severally by these presents Sealed with our<lb/>
                        seals, the <date when="1843-05-04">fourth day of May in the year of our Lord<lb/>
                        one thousand eight hundred + forty three</date>
               </p>
                    <p>The condition of this obligation is such, whereas, the <lb/>
                        said <persName>Mary Johnson,</persName> has this day obtained from the <lb/>
                        County Court, of St. Louis County, as license to remain in<lb/>
                        this State under the provisions of an act of the General<lb/>
                        Assembly, of the Sate of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>; entitled an act;<lb/>
                        more effetually to prevent free persons of Color from<lb/>
                        coming in the State, and for other purposes.</p>
                    <p>Now, therefore, if the said <persName>Mary Johnson</persName> shall be <lb/>
                        of good behavior during the continuance of said<lb/>
                        license, then the above obligation, to be void, otherwise<lb/>
                        to be + remain in full force + virtue.</p>
