                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we <lb/>
                        <persName>Jacob Padfield</persName>, a free negro, as principal and <persName> R. Peters W</persName> 
                  <lb/>
                        as security both of the County of St. Louis <lb/>
                        and State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> are holden and are <lb/>
                        firmly bound and obliged to the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> 
                  <lb/>
                        in the full sum of Four Hundred Dollars, to <lb/>
                        wit the said <persName>Jacob</persName> as principal in the <lb/>
                        sum of two hundred Dollars for himself and the <lb/>
                        said <persName>R. Peters W</persName> as security in the sum of <lb/>
                        Two Hundred Dollars for himself, to the <lb/>
                        payment of which, we do bind our heirs <lb/>
                        executors &amp; administrators firmly by these <lb/>
                        presents. <choice>

                        <date when="1843-05-03">third day of May in the year of our <lb/>
                        Lord eighteen Hundred &amp; forty three</date>.
                    </p>
                    <p>The condition of this obligation is such <lb/>
                        that whereas the said has this day applied <lb/>
                        to the County Court of St. Louis County in the <lb/>
                        State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> for license to reside in <lb/>
                        said state as a free negro, under the provisions <lb/>
                        of an Act of the Legislation of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> entitled <lb/>
                        "An Act more effectually to prevent free persons of color from entering into this State and <lb/>
                        for other purposes", Approved <date when="1843-02-23">Feb. 23<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> 1843</date>_
                    </p>
                    <p>Now if the said <persName>Jacob</persName> shall be <lb/>
                        of good behavior during the continuance <lb/>
                        of said license, then this bond shall be <lb/>
                        void; otherwise shall remain in good &amp; full force &amp; virtue
                    </p>
