                    <p>Know all men by these presents that We <lb/>
                        <persName>John Thomas</persName>, A free man of Colour, and <persName>Cunningham N. <lb/>
                            Ferguson</persName>, All of the city, and County of St Louis, State<lb/>
                    of Missouri, are held and firmly bound to the<lb/>
                    State of Missouri in the sum of One Thousand dollars<lb/>
                    $1000 00/100 to be levied upon our goods and chattels land<lb/>
                    and turnments, and also for the full payment of which<lb/>
                    sum of money we <sic>severly</sic> bind ourselves our heirs <lb/>
                    executors, administrators, and assigns firmly<lb/>
                    by these presents. Sealed with our seals and<lb/>
                    dated the <date when="1843-05-04">4th day of May 1843___</date>

                    <p>The conditions of the above obligation is such that<lb/>
                    whereas the above named <persName>John Thomas</persName>, has been a<lb/>
                    resident citizen of the state of Missouri since<lb/>
                    the summer of 1835_ in which state he has since that<lb/>
                    time resided, and make his place of <sic>residince</sic> and<lb/>
                    to procure a license to enable him to remain<lb/>
                    in said state of Missouri, now if the said <persName>John<lb/>
                    Thomas</persName> deports himself in a proper <sic>maner</sic>
                  <lb/>
                        <sic>acording</sic> to law, maintains and <sic>suports</sic> himself<lb/>
                        so as not to become a charge upon the county<lb/>
                        of St Louis, or any other County in said state<lb/>
                        Missouri. And in all other matters behaves <lb/> 
                        himself peaceably, orderly, and honestly<lb/>
                        then this obligation tobe made and <lb/>
                        void otherwise to remain in full force <lb/>
                        and virtue</p>
