                  <lb/> heretofore to wit on the <date when="1834-10-01">first day of october in the<lb/> year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred<lb/> and thirty four</date> at said County with force<lb/> and arms &amp;c. assaulted the said plaintiff, &amp; him<lb/> then and there did beat bruise &amp; ill treat &amp;<lb/> then and there imprisoned him said plaintiff<lb/> &amp; kept and detained him in prison there for a<lb/> long time without any reasonable or probable<lb/> cause, to wit hitherto contrary to law &amp; against<lb/> the will of the plaintiff and said plaintiff<lb/> avers that before and at the time of the com-<lb/>mitting the grievances aforesaid, he was and<lb/> still is a free person, &amp; that the defendant<lb/> then held and detained him and still holds<lb/> &amp; detains him in slavery, and other <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">

               <p>and afterwards within the time allowed by<lb/> law the plaintiff moved the court to set aside<lb/> the finding of the court in this case &amp;<lb/> grant a new trial for the reason in<lb/> writing filed that the said finding was against law &amp;<lb/> against evidence, which motion was by the<lb/> court overruled, to which opinion of the<lb/> court overruling said motion the plaintiff<lb/> by his counsel excepted &amp; prays the court<lb/> to sign &amp; seal this his bill of exceptions<lb/> which is done accordingly</p>
