                    <p>Known all men by these presents, that I <lb/>
                    <persName>John Lee</persName> as principal and <persName>John Waters</persName>
                  <lb/>
                    as security are held and firmly bound unto<lb/>
                        the state of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, in the just and full sum<lb/>
                    of four hundred dollars, that is to say the said<lb/>
                    <persName>John Lee</persName> in the sum of two hundred dollars<lb/>
                    and the said <persName>John Waters</persName> in teh sum of two<lb/>
                    hundred dollars, fo rthe true payment of which<lb/>
                    sum of money we bind ourselves, one and each of<lb/>
                    our heirs, executors, administrators and <choice>
                     <orig>afsigns</orig>
                     
                  </choice> joint-<lb/>
                    ly and severally firmly by these presents, sealed <lb/>
                    with our seals and dated this <date when="1843-05-03">third day of May, in<lb/>
                    the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred<lb/>
                    and forty three.</date>
               </p>
                    <p>The condition of the above obliga-<lb/>
                        tion is such, whereas the said <persName>John Lee</persName> has<lb/>
                    this day obtained from the County court of St. Louis<lb/>
                    county a license to remain in this State under the  pro-<lb/>
                    visions of an act of the General Assembly of the State<lb/>
                        of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> entitled "An act more effectually to<lb/>
                        <unclear unit="chars" quantity="8" rend="strikethrough"/> prevent free persons of colour from com-<lb/>
                    ing into this state and for other  purposes," Now<lb/>
                    if the said <persName>John Lee</persName> shall be of good beha-<lb/>
                    viour during the continuance of said License<lb/>
                    then, the above obligation to be void, else to be and<lb/>
                    to remain in full force and virtue.</p>
