                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we <persName>Patsey Evans</persName>
                  <lb/>
                    and <persName>Josiah Clark</persName> of the city &amp; county of Saint<lb/>
                    Louis and State of Missouri are held and firmly bound to<lb/>
                    the state of Missouri in the sum of five hundred dollars good and<lb/>
                    lawful money, the payment whereof well and thereby to be<lb/>
                    made we firmly bind our selves our heirs executors and ad-<lb/>
                    ministrators by these presents.</p>
                    <p>The condition of the above obligation is such that<lb/>
                    whereas the said <persName>Patsey Evans</persName> a free person of Color of the city<lb/>
                    of St. Louis and State aforsaid has this day obtained a license<lb/>
                    from the county court of Saint Louis County and state of Missouri<lb/>
                    to remain in said state under and in persuance of an act entitled<lb/>
                    "An Act to <add place="above">more effectually</add> to prevent free persons of color from entering into this state<lb/>
                    and for other purposes" Approved <date when="1843-02-23"> February twenty third in<lb/>
                        the year of our Lord eighteen hundred &amp; forty-three</date> NOW<lb/>
                    therefore if the said <persName>Petsey Evans</persName> shall &amp; do continue of good<lb/>
                    moral character and behaviour, and to support herself by<lb/>
                    lawful employment then this obligation to be null &amp; void<lb/>
                    otherwise to be and remain in full force and virtue</p>
                    <p>As witness our hands and seals this <date when="1843-05-03">third day of <lb/>
                    May A.D. 1843</date>
