                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we <persName>Herman <lb/>
                        Hamilton</persName> as principal &amp; <persName>William F. <unclear unit="word" quantity="1" rend="written"/>
                  </persName> as se- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        curity are held and firmly bound in the just sum <lb/>
                        of two hundred dollars to the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> ,lb/
                        the payment whereof well and truly to be made <lb/>
                        we bind ourselves our heirs executors &amp; administrators <lb/>
                        bound firmly by these presents
                    </p>
                    <p>The condition of this obligation <lb/>
                        is such that whereas the said <persName>Herman Hamilton</persName> 
                  <lb/>
                        has this day obtained from the County Court of <lb/>
                        St Louis County a license to remain in the state <lb/>
                        as a free person of color under the provision <lb/>
                        of an act entitled an act to prevent more ef- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        fectually to prevent free persons of color from <lb/>
                        entering in this state and for other purposes ap- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        proved <date when="1843-02-23">23 Feby. 1843</date> Now if the said <persName>Herman <lb/>
                        Hamilton</persName> shall be of good behaviour during the <lb/>
                        continuance of said license then the above ob- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        ligation is void otherwise of full force and virtue. Signed &amp; sealed by us this <date when="1843-11-14">fourteenth <lb/>
                        day of Nov. 1843</date>
