                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we<lb/>
                    <persName>
                     <unclear unit="chars" quantity="6"/> Meachum</persName> as principal and <persName> John B.<lb/>
                    Meachum</persName> as security are held &amp; firmly bound<lb/>
                    unto the state of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, in the full &amp; hath<lb/>
                    sum of Four hundred dollars for the true pay=<lb/>
                    =ment whereof we bind ourselves our heirs, ex=<lb/>
                    =ecutors, administrators &amp; assigns jointly +<lb/>
                    severally by these presents, sealed with our<lb/>
                    seals and dated this <date when="1843-05-04"> fourth day of May<lb/>
                    eighteen hundred &amp; forty-three</date>
               </p>
                    <p>The conditions of this obligation is such<lb/>
                    that whereas <persName>Clemson Meachum</persName> has this day<lb/>
                    obtained from the County Court of St Louis<lb/>
                    County a license to remain in this state<lb/>
                    and a free person of color, under the provisions<lb/>
                    of an act <unclear reason="deletion"/> of the general<lb/>
                    <choice>
                     <orig>afsembly</orig>
                     
                  </choice> of the state of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> entitled an<lb/>
                    act more effectually to prevent free persons<lb/>
                    of color from coming into this state, and for<lb/>
                    other purposes approved <date when="1843-02-23"/>twenty third day<lb/>.
                    of February Eighteen hundred + forty three</p>
                <p>Now the condition of this bond is such<lb/>
                that if the said <unclear unit="word" quantity="1"/>, shall<lb/>
                be of good behaviour during the continance<lb/>
                of said license, thn the above obligation to <lb/>
                be void, otherwise to remain in full force &amp; virtue</p>
