                    <p>Know all men by their presents that I <persName> Maria Bates</persName>as principal<lb/>
                          a free yellow Woman of Color and <persName>Willys King___</persName>
                  <lb/>
                        as her security are held and firmly bound unto the state of <lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> in the Just and full sum of two hundred dollars<lb/>
                        for the true payment of which said sum of money we<lb/> 
                        bond ourselves  and each of our heirs Executors Administrators <lb/>
                        and <choice>
                     <orig>afsigns</orig>
                     
                  </choice>
                  <lb/>
                        Jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed<lb/>
                        with our seals and dated this <date when="1843-05-02">third day of May in the year of <lb/>
                        our Lord One Thousand eight hundred + forty three___</date>
               </p>
                    <p>The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas<lb/>
                        the said <persName>Maria Bates</persName> has this day obtained from the County <lb/>
                        court of St Louis  County a License to remain in the State of as<lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>under an act entitled "An Act to prevent free persons<lb/>
                        of Color from entering into the state and for other purposes<lb/>
                    </p>
                       
                    <p>Now if the said Maria Bates shall be of good behaviour --<lb/>
                       during the continuance of said License then the above__<lb/>
                       obligation to be void else to remain in full force &amp; virtue
                    </p>
