                    <p>Know all men by these presents that <lb/>
                        we <persName>John Francis</persName> as principal and <lb/>
                        <persName>Elijah C. Eads</persName> as security are held and firmly <lb/>
                        bound unto the state of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> in the penal <lb/>
                        sum of two hundred dollars for the payment <lb/>
                        of which well and truly to be made we bind <lb/>
                        ourselves, our heirs, executors or administra- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        tors jointly and severally firmly by these <lb/>
                        presents sealed with their seals and dated this <lb/>
                        <date when="1843-05-04">fourt day of May 1843</date>
                    </p>
                    <p>The condition of the above obligation is such <lb/>
                        that whereas the County Court of St Louis Coun- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        ty state of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> has this day aforesaid <lb/>
                        granted a license to the above named <lb/>
                        <persName>John Francis</persName> to reside in the said state of <lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> as a free person of colour. Now <lb/>
                        if the said <persName>John Francis</persName> shall be of good <lb/>
                        behaviour during his residence in said state <lb/>
                        of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> then this obligation to be void <lb/>
                        in law, otherwise to remain in full force <lb/>
                        and virtue
