               <p>My wages for the eighteen months of my <lb/>engagement were two hundred &amp; fifty dollars <lb/>and that was my first trip. <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">

The usual mode of <lb/>hunting in that country is to go out on <lb/>horseback and if game is killed to pack <lb/>it on the horse &amp; return to the fort on foot <lb/>This mode is adopted to guard against danger <lb/>from the Indians. if attacked going out <lb/>the men can more easily escape if attacked <lb/>when coming in the meat can be thrown <lb/>off and the horse mounted To go out <lb/>hunting on foot is very dangerous, and <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">
