organization.</p>

police department felt that, since there was
the break-up between uh Malcolm and uh
Elijah, there would be violence, guns and
whatever, so they wanted uh to get somebody
in to uh to make sure that uh there was no
guns and...</p>

so if you start again, since the police

department felt that since Malcolm had uh
broken away from Elijah, that uh there would
be some violence, some um retaliations and
whatever, so they wanted somebody there to um

up, were you aware of the tension that was
going on, and the potential for both for
violence and what kind of a thing were you
being asked to do as, as a as a, once you'd
infiltrated the organization, and let me know
that you have infiltrated. You have to give
me more information.</p>

tension, due to the uh the media. And it was
felt that someone would try to uh take his
life, take Malcolm's life, or someone would</p>

keep down a basic war between the two um the

department asking you, basically, were you
just, were, explain what your, your duties
were, in terms of inside the organization,
and in relationship to the department itself.</p>

them know size of the organization, names if
possible, who had weapons, if anybody had
weapons, if um if there were some act that
was going to take place, to let them know
that so they could be prepared for it.<note type="handwritten">]]7798</note></p>

<p>Q: OK. And while you were there, what did
you, what what did you see, and what what
kind of things did you report to (unintel)?</p>

the department was uh who attended meetings,
how many, and what was said. If there was
talk of guns, then I would mention it in my</p>

coming into the organization in the
beginning, do you have any personal feelings
about Malcolm and the organization and what
they represented in in the whole scheme of uh
national security, or as a as and
organization?</p>

<p> Well, coming into um, coming in to
the uh (unintel) Mosque, Malcolm's group, uh
I had just gotten out of the military, and I
really didn't uh didn't know that much about
it. So, I really had, at that time, or
whenever, no conceived notions about who this
man was, or just from what I saw, and that
was it.</p>

<p>Q: Mmm-hmm. And what had you seen up to
that point? What did, what, you know, with
the limited thing that you had seen about
him, what did you uh know about him or feel
about him at that time?</p>

uh, he had already gone to Africa to make the
uh pilgrimage, and to visit some uh African
leaders. So for a while he wasn't there, and
all we were having, um, they would talk of
his travels, um, they will let you know if
they had heard from me, there was the time
when he had uh contacted food poisoning while
over there, and they were concerned about
that. And after he, after he came back, uh
<note type="handwritten">CH 7965</note> he was mentioned the fact that uh he had seen
not only black Muslims, but yellow Muslims,
uh blonde-haired, blue-eyed Muslims, so he
um, he kind of toned down the uh the black
Muslim issue and just made it a Muslim issue,
and then he started the Organization of uh
African American Unity, and he was gonna
bring the problem uh into the field of human
rights, as opposed to civil rights.<note type="handwritten">]]8019</note></p>

<p>Q: Um, so uh, how did this, during this
time, when he finally comes back from Africa
and you you first, did you recognize at that
time, or did you see in any sort of explicit
way the the tension or that was surrounding</p>

himself?</p>

<p> Uh, did- I saw the tension was
still there, but I also felt that he was
moving in a different direction.</p>

from Africa, there's still sort of (unintel).</p>

<p><note type="handwritten">[8070</note> Uh, <note type="handwritten">[</note>when he came back from Africa,
uh the tensions between the two groups was
still there. Uh, one, due to the fact that
at that time, uh, Elijah hadn't made a Hajj.
The other was now that Malcolm's getting uh
nation-wide publicity, that's just what was
right here in the country, he was given
<note type="handwritten">CH 8103</note> world-wide uh, he was gettin' world-wide
support, and he had met with people that
wouldn't sit down and talk to Elijah, meaning
the heads of African states. So that tension
was still there, and there was a underlying
feeling that uh he was getting too big for
his pants, so to speak.<note type="handwritten">]]8130</note></p>

police police department was was interested
in trying to uh uh interrupt or uh avoid any,
stop any sort of attempt on Malcolm's life or
Elijah? This is the whole point of the
information that you're giving them?</p>

<p> Well, that um, that certainly
would've stopped the uh problem between the
two groups was, I felt, basically, what I was
doing with the information that I was given--</p>

talking about, and and for the audience, they
don't know what we're talking about.</p>

damage to the Mosque, or stopping uh stopping
Elijah's people from selling the papers
around the Theresa Hotel, uh they will want
to know that, uh they would want to know if
there were guns available, and just what was
planned to get back at Elijah's people. And
if I could, find out what was Elijah's people
trying to do to get at Malcolm's people.<note type="handwritten">]]8240</note></p>

was Malcolm's security, within his own
organization? Talk to me about that. Give
me a real picture of it. Um, talking about
Malcolm's security. </p>

<p><note type="handwritten">8258[</note> Well, <note type="handwritten">[</note>I felt that his, Malcolm's
security was uh kind of loose. Uh, they had,
to me, they had a small command of what they
were doing, but I would say that they
weren't, or didn't act, as well-trained as uh
Elijah's people. If you could see Elijah's
people when they had uh when they had the uh
security job.<note type="handwritten">]]8302</note></p>

<p>that moment? What was the perceived uh uh,
who was perceived to be responsible for it,
and uh how did uh Malcolm's organization
basically decide they were responsible?</p>

<p><note type="handwritten">[[8342</note> Well, when Malcom's house was
fire-bombed, uh, there was, there were a lot
of rumors. Uh, some, police department did
it, some, the FBI/CIA did it. Others felt
that uh Elijah's people had fire-bombed his
house. What had happened that day, well, the
day after, the morning after, a few of us
went over to see if everything was alright,
and then they came back to the Theresa. We
<note type="handwritten">CH 8393</note> had gotten locked up over there, because one
of the guys had a gun in the car, and they
saw us, police that were stationed saw us uh
put the gun in the trunk, and so he called
for help, and they took us over to the
precinct, and they held us for a while. And
then they released us, and we went back, and
the discussion was still that Elijah's people
<note type="handwritten">CH 8434</note> were responsible. Some felt the CIA, FBI,
the police department, but everybody agreed
to the fact that he was in mortal danger.<note type="handwritten">]]8457</note></p>

assigned by the New York City Police
Department to uh infiltrate Malcolm's
organization, uh report back membership,
names, weapons (if any). And I attended
meetings and was part of the security on

bombing, that there was a lot of speculation
about who did it, and within or in Malcolm's
organization. How, when you report that kind
of, did you report that, those, all that
speculation back to the police department?
How did they respond, that...?</p>

<p> Uh, reporting back the speculations
that the organization had on Malcolm's house
being fire-bombed, um, whatever the
speculations were, I reported it. If they
said they felt the PD had done it, then that

myself, and a couple other individuals whose
names I can't remember right now. And um, I
remember his <note type="handwritten">face</note> (unintel) had had an altercation
with some members of Elijah's people, and
they had busted him in the head with uh with
<note type="handwritten">CH 8862</note> a paint can. He was hurt pretty bad. He was
there, and as I said, a few others. And
there was discussion as to uh searching,
which we were told by James Shabbaz that
Malcolm didn't want anybody searched uh. <note type="handwritten">on it</note>

the whole thing, basically saying that he and
