                    <p>Know all men by these presents that <persName>J Edward <lb/>
                        Green</persName> as principal a free man of color +<lb/>
                        <persName>Thomas B Harden</persName> as his security on hold<lb/>
                        and firmly bound unto the state of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> 
                  <lb/>
                        in the just and full sum of two hundred<lb/>
                        dollars for the true payment of which said<lb/> 
                        sum of money we bind ourselvs our and<lb/>
                        each of our heirs executors administrators and<lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>afsigns</orig>
                     
                  </choice> jointly and severally firmly by these pres-<lb/>
                        ents sealed with our seals and dated this the <lb/>
                        <date when="1843-05-01">first-day of May in the year of our Lord one thou_<lb/>
                            sand eight hundred + forty three.</date>
                    </p>
                    
                    <p>The condition of the above obliga<lb/>
                        tion is such, that wherever the said <persName>Edward<lb/>
                            Green</persName> has this day obtained from the County<lb/>
                        Court of St. Louis County a License to remain<lb/>
                        in the state as a free man of color<lb/>
                        under the provisions of "an act of the General <choice>
                     <orig>Afsem</orig>
                     
                  </choice>
                  <lb/>
                        bly of the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>approved Entitled "An Act <lb/>
                        to prevent free persons of color from entering<lb/> 
                        into this state and for other purposes" Now<lb/>
                        if the said <persName>Edward Green</persName> shall be of good<lb/>
                        behavior during the Continuance of said <lb/>
                        <unclear unit="chars" quantity="8"/> then the above obligation to be void <lb/>
                        else the same to be and remaining in full force<lb/>
                        and virtue</p>
