                    <p>Know all men by these presents that <lb/>
                        we <persName>Charlotte Brown</persName> as principal and <lb/>
                        <del rend="strikethrough">
                     <persName>Benj. F. McKinney</persName>
                  </del>
                  <add place="above">
                     <persName>William Smith</persName>
                  </add> &amp; <persName>Louis DuBruid</persName> as securities are held <lb/>
                        and firmly bound unto the State of <lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> in the full and just sum of <lb/>
                        two hundred dollars for the true <lb/>
                        payment whereof we bind ourselves <lb/>
                        our heirs, executors, administrators and <lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>afsigns</orig>
                     
                  </choice> jointly and severally by these <lb/>
                        presents sealed with our seals and <lb/>
                        dated this <date when="1843-05-02">second day of May eighteen <lb/>
                            hundred &amp; forty three</date>. The Condition <lb/>
                        of this obligation is such that whereas <lb/>
                        Charlotte Brown a free woman of color <lb/>
                        has this day obtained from the County <lb/>
                        Court of St Louis County a license to <lb/>
                        remain in this State, as a free of color, <lb/>
                        under the provisions of an Act of the <lb/>
                        General <choice>
                     <orig>Afsembly</orig>
                     
                  </choice> of the State of <lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, entitled "An act more <lb/>
                        effectually to prevent free persons of <lb/>
                        color from coming into this state and for other <lb/>
                        purposes approved the <date when="1843-02-23">twenty third day <lb/>
                            of February eighteen hundred and forty <lb/>
                            three"</date>_ Now the conditions of this <lb/>
                        obligation is such that if the said <persName>Char- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                            -lotte Brown</persName> shall be of good behaviour <lb/>
                        during the continuance of said license, <lb/>
                        <sic>than</sic> the above obligations to be void <lb/>
                        otherwise to remain in full force and <lb/>
                        virtue
