                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we<lb/>
                        <persName>Ned Padfield</persName> a free negro as principal and Charles Boswell<lb/>
                    as security - both of St. Louis <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>
                  <lb/>
                    are held and firmly bound unto the said<lb/>
                    State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> in the sum of four<lb/>
                    hundred dollars- said principal in two-<lb/>
                    hundred himself and said security in<lb/>
                    the sum of two hundred dollars_is the <lb/>
                    payment of which sum well and truly<lb/>
                    to be made, we bind ourselves our <lb/>
                    heirs- executors, and administrators firmly<lb/>
                    by these presents - 
                   </p>
                    <p>The condition of the above obligation is<lb/>
                    such, what whereas_I and Ned <persName>Ned Padfield</persName>
                  <lb/>
                    has applied to the St. Louis County Court<lb/>
                    for a License under an act of the State<lb/>
                        of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> approved <date when="2012-02-23">February 23 1843</date>
                  <lb/>
                    entitled an act more efectually to pre<lb/>
                    -vent free persons of color from entering<lb/>
                    into the state, and for other purposes<lb/>
                        <choice>

                     <sic>No</sic>
                  </choice>if said <persName>Ned</persName> shall be of good" behavior during the <unclear unit="chars" quantity="2"/>tinuance of <lb/>
                    said License_ then this obligation<lb/>
                    shall be void_otherwise shall be <lb/>
                    in full force and virtue</p>
