                    <p>Know all men by these Presents that we<lb/>
                        <persName>John Brown</persName> as principal and <persName>
                     <unclear unit="chars" quantity="2" rend="strikethrough">Benj. F. McKe</unclear>
                  </persName>

                     <persName>William Smith</persName>
                  </add>
                  <lb/>
                        &amp; <persName>Louis DuBrasil</persName> as securities are held &amp; firmly bound<lb/>
                        unto the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, in the full and and just<lb/>
                        sum of two hundred Dollars for the true payment<lb/>
                        whereof we bind ouselves our heirs executors<lb/>
                        administrators and <choice>
                     <orig> afsigns</orig>
                     
                  </choice> jointly and severally<lb/>
                        by thse presents, sealed with our seals and dated this<lb/>
                        <date when="1843-05-02"> second day of May eighteen hundred + forty three</date>
               </p>
                    <p>The condition ofthis obligation is such that whereas<lb/>
                        <persName>John Brown</persName> a free man of color, has this day obtained<lb/>
                        from the County court of Saint Louis County, a <lb/>
                        license to remain in this state, as a free person of <lb/>
                        color, under the provision of an act of the general<lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>Afsembly</orig>
                     
                  </choice> of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> , entitled "an act of<lb/>
                        more effectually to prevent free persons of color<lb/>
                        from coming into this State and for other purposes<lb/>
                        approved the twenty third day of February<lb/>
                        eighteen hundred and forty-three"_<lb/>
                    </p>
                    <p>Now the conditions of this obligation is<lb/>
                        such that if the said <persName>John Brown</persName> shall <lb/>
                        be of good behaviour during the continuance<lb/>
                        if said license, than the above obligation to<lb/>
                        be void otherwise to remain in full force and<lb/>
                        virtue_</p>
