                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we <persName>Ferdinand</persName>
                  <lb/>
                         a free man of color as principal, and <persName>W. G. Ray</persName>
                  <lb/>
                        __________ as security, are firmly held and bound<lb/>
                        unto the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, in the final sum of two <lb/>
                        hundred dollars <add place="above">Each</add> upon condition <choice>
                     <orig>neverthelefs</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, that<lb/>
                        whereas the said <persName>Ferdinand</persName> has this day obtained<lb/>
                        a license from the County Court within and for<lb/>
                        the County of St. Louis in the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, to<lb/>
                        furnish him the said <persName>Ferdinand</persName> to remain in <lb/>
                     the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>; now if the said <persName>Ferdinand</persName>
                  <lb/>
                        shall be of good behaviour, and conduct him=<lb/>
                        self in and orderly and collect manner during<lb/>
                        his stay in said State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, then this ob=<lb/>
                        ligation to be void, else of full force and virtue.</p>
                    <p>In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our<lb/>
                        hands and seals this <date when="1843-05-04">fourth day of May eig=<lb/>
                        teen hundred and forty-three.</date>
