of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same; and the Court, moreover, be- ing satisfied, that said applicant has taken the preparatory steps required by the Laws of the United States concerning the naturalization of foreigners, and he declaring here, in open Court, upon oath, that he will support the Constitution of the United States, and that he doth entirely and absolutely renounce and abjure, forever, all allegiance to every foreign Power, Prince, State, and Sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to the Grand Duke of Hesse Darm- stadt, of whom he was heretofore a subject, therefore the said Christian Pathtoll is admitted a Citizen of the United States of America._

And now at this day come again the parties by their respective Attor- neys, and by agreement of said par- ties, and with leave of the Court, all the pleas, demurrers and replications heretofore filed are withdrawn, and the Defen- dants file the following plea,_"And the said Defendants come and defend the wrong and injury when &c and say that the said Plaintiffs did not observe per- form fulfil and keep the promises, covenants, agreements and conditions, in the said Policies of Insurance contained, on their part and behalf to be observed ful- filled and kept; nor did the said Defendants neglect or refuse to observe fulfil and keep any of the covenants, promises, agreements, or conditions, in the said pol- icies of insurance contained, on their part to be observed, performed, fulfilled and kept, according to the tenor and effect, true intent and meaning of the said Poli- cies of Insurance, in manner and form as the Plaintiffs have above thereof alleged, and of this the Defendants put themselves upon the Country &c."_ Geyer for Defts._" Which said plea is filed with the following agreement of the parties, here made in open Court, to wit._"that the pleadings so amended shall stand and have the same ef- fect, as if the policies of insurance, in the declaration mentioned, had not been seal- ed with the seal of the Defendants, and the declaration and form of action were trespass on the case upon promises, and the plea, the general issue, Each party hav- ing the same right to introduce testimony, with the same effect, and all questions of Law aris- ing to be determined, as if this action was Assumpsit, and the plea, the general issue. The Defendants waiving proof of interest, notice of loss and claim of indem- nity, before the commencement of this suit, and admitting also the sea-worthiness of the Boat, excepting in the competency in number and skill of Engineers, the soundness and sufficiency of the Boilers, Engine and Machinery of said Boat._ The Plaintiffs on their part admitting that the losses and damages in the dec- laration mentioned, were occasioned by the bursting of one of the Boilers and brea- king of the Engine of said Boat, without external violence."

Trespass. Now at this day comes the said Andrean Paschall by his Attorney and files his petition herein, which being seen, heard and by the Court fully understood, it is ordered that said petitioner have leave to sue as a poor person, in order to establish his right to free- dom; And it appearing to the Court that said petitioner is about to be removed out of the jurisdiction of this Court, it is ordered that the Sheriff of St Louis county take pos- session of said Andrean Paschall, and hire him out to the best advantage, from time to time, during the pendency of this suit, and take a Bond from the hirer, payable to the State of Missouri, in the penalty of Six hundred and fifty dollars, and with such Se- cuity as shall be approved by the Sheriff, conditioned that the petitioner shall, du- ring the pendency of this suit, have reasonable liberty to attend his Counsel and the

William Milburn, Esquire, Sheriff of the County of St Louis, comes into Court here and acknowledges the execution of a deed by him as Sheriff as aforesaid, unto John F. Dar- by, of all the right, title, interest, claim, estate and property of Leander Lawrence, of, in and to the following described real estate, to wit, "A certain lot or parcel of ground with the improvements thereon, situated and being in the City of St Louis, in the County of St Louis, fronting of Ninth Street, between Chestnut Street and Pine Street, being part of the same lot conveyed to Eleanor Gray by John B.C. Lucas, by deed bearing date of June 1841, as

Hopkins, the Defendant in this case, admits that at the time of the institution of this suit he held the said Thomas Jefferson, a man of color, in his service as a slave, having hired him of Doctor Prosser of Jacksonville, Illinois.
