               <p>The defendants, by their counsel, also moved<lb/> the court to decide.</p>
               <p>2nd that that if the court (sitting as a jury in the<lb/> cause) finds from the Evidence, that the mother<lb/> of the plaintiff was a negro or mulatto wom<lb/>an, legally held in slavery before and at and<lb/> after the passage of the ordinance entitled, “an<lb/> ordinance for the Government of the Territory<lb/> of the united states, west of the river <placeName>
