                  </unclear> on the<lb/> case on promises — For that whereas the said<lb/> defendant heretofeor to wit on the <date when="1827-04-01">first day of<lb/> april eighteen hundred and thirty seven</date> at st<lb/> Louis to wit at the county aforesaid made his cer-<lb/>tain promissory note in writing (which is now<lb/> here to the count shown)<lb/> 
                  <unclear rend="strikethrough" unit="chars">bearing date the day<lb/> &amp; year</unclear> and thereby then and there promised to<lb/> pay on demand to the said plaintiff or order<lb/> the sum of five hundred and sixteen dollars<lb/> and eighty seven cents for value received with<lb/> out defalcation and then and there delivered<lb/> the said promissory note to the said plaintiff;—<lb/> by means whereof the said defendant then &amp; there<lb/> became liable to pay to the said plaintiff the<lb/> said <unclear rend="written" unit="chars">

                  <lb/> in the penal<lb/> sum of <seg rend="form-fill-in">one thousand</seg> dollars, for<lb/> the payment of which well and truly to be made, we do hereby bind ourselves, and our<lb/> heirs, executers, and administrators, firmly by these presents.
