                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we<lb/>
                    <persName>Charles Johnson</persName> as principal and <persName>Henry Von Phul</persName>
                  <lb/>
                    as security are held and firmly bound unto the state<lb/>
                        of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> in the full and just sum two hundred<lb/>
                    dollars <add place="above">each</add> for the true payment of which sum of money<lb/>
                    we bind our heirs, executors, administrators and<lb/>
                    <choice>
                     <orig>afsigns</orig>
                     
                  </choice> jointly and severally by these presents sealed<lb/>
                    with our seals and dated this<date when="1843-06-25">twenty fifth day of June<lb/>
                    in the eighteen hundred and forty three</date>
               </p>
                    <p>
                    The condition of this obligation is such that<lb/>
                    whereas <persName>Charles Johnson</persName> has this day obtained from<lb/>
                    the County court of St. Louis County a license to<lb/>
                    remain in this state as a free man of color<lb/>
                    under the provisions of an act entitled "An act<lb/>
                    more effectually to prevent free persons of colour<lb/>
                    from entering into this state and other purposes"<lb/>
                    approved <date when="1843-02-23">23rd February 1843</date>
                    </p>
                    <p>Now the condition of this bond is such that<lb/>
                    if the said <persName>Charles Johnson</persName> shall be of good behavior<lb/>
                    during the continuance of said license then the<lb/>
                    above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in<lb/>
                    full force and virtue.</p>
