                    <p>Know all men by these presents that I <persName>Matilda Butler</persName> 
                  <lb/>
                        as principal and <persName>Samuel Somerville</persName> &amp; <lb/>
                        as securities are held &amp; firmly bound unto the State of <lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, in the sum of Four Hundred dollars <lb/>
                        to be paid to the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice>, to which payment <lb/>
                        well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves firmly <lb/>
                        by these presents. Sealed with our seals, dated this <lb/>
                        <date when="1844-03-29">Twenty ninth day of March in the year of our Lord <lb/>
                        eighteen hundred and forty four_</date>
                    </p>
                    <p>Now the condition of this obligation is such that <lb/>
                        whereas the said <persName>Matilda Butler</persName> hath this day obtained <lb/>
                        a license, from the County Court of St Louis County, under <lb/>
                        an act entitled "An act more effectually to prevent <lb/>
                        free persons of color from entering into this State and <lb/>
                        for other purposes" to reside in the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> 
                  <lb/>
                        as a free colored person. Now if the said Matilda <lb/>
                        Butler shall during her residence in the said <lb/>
                        State conduct herself in a peaceable and orderly <lb/>
                        manner and be of good behaviour, then this <lb/>
                        obligation to be void and of no effect, otherwise <lb/>
                        to remain and be in full force and virtue.
