                    <p>Know all men by these presents I <persName>Nelson Nicholas</persName> 
                  <lb/>
                        as principal and <persName>Napoleon Mullikin</persName> as his <lb/>
                        security are held and firmly bound unto <lb/>
                        the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> in the just and full sum <lb/>
                        of four hundred dollars that is to say the <lb/>
                        said <persName>Nicholas</persName> in the sum of two hundred <lb/>
                        dollars and the said <persName>Mullikin</persName> in the sum <lb/>
                        of two hundred dollars for the true payment <lb/>
                        of which we bind ourselves on and <lb/>
                        each of our heirs executors administrators <lb/>
                        and <choice>
                     <orig>afsigns</orig>
                     
                  </choice> jointly &amp; severally, firmly <lb/>
                        by these presents sealed with our seals and <lb/>
                        dated this <date when="1843-05-02">second day of May in the year <lb/>
                        of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and forty three</date>.
                    </p>                   
                    <p>The condition of the above <lb/>
                        obligation is such that whereas the said <persName>Nelson <lb/>
                        Nicholas</persName> has this day obtained from the <lb/>
                        St Louis county Court a license to remain <lb/>
                        here under the provisions of an act of <lb/>
                        the General <choice>
                     <orig>Afsembly</orig>
                     
                  </choice> of the State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> 
                  <lb/>
                        entitled "An Act more effectually to <lb/>
                        prevent free persons of color from enter- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        ing into this state &amp; for other purposes_ App- <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        roved the <date when="1843-02-23">twenty third day of February in <lb/>
                        the year of our Lord One thousand eight <lb/>
                        hundred &amp; forty three</date>. Now if the said <lb/>
                        <persName>Nelson Nicholas</persName> shall be of good <lb/>
                        behavior during the continuance of <lb/>
                        said license then these presents to be <lb/>
                        void else to be and remain in full <lb/>
                        force &amp; virtue_
