                    <p>Know all men by these presents that we<lb/>
                    <persName>Leroy Tannert</persName> as principal <persName>Herman L. Hoffman</persName>
                  <lb/>
                    as security are held and firmly bound unto<lb/>
                        the State of <sic>Misouri</sic> in the sum of Two<lb/>
                    hundred dollars each for the true payment<lb/>
                    of which we bind ourselves ourheirs executors<lb/>
                    and administrators firmly by these presents<lb/>
                    sealed with our seals this <date when="1843-05-04"> 4th of May A.D. 1843</date>
                    </p>
                    <p>The condition of the above obligation is<lb/>
                    such that wherease the county Court for the<lb/>
                    County of St. Louis has this day granted<lb/>
                    to the above named <persName>Leroy Tanner</persName> a free<lb/>
                    man of color a License to reside in this<lb/>
                    State of Missouri. Now if the said <persName>Leroy<lb/>
                    Tanner</persName> shall be of good behaviour and<lb/>
                    properly demean himself during his<lb/>
                    residence in the State of Missouri then<lb/>
                    this obligation to be null and void other-<lb/>
                    wise to remailin full force and virtue</p>
