                    <p>Know all men by these presents,- that <lb/>
                        we <persName>Newsome D. Artist</persName> as principal and <lb/>
                        <persName>John <unclear unit="word" quantity="1" rend="written"/>
                  </persName> as security both of St Louis <lb/>
                        are held and firmly bound unto the State <lb/>
                        of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> in the sum of four hun <lb rend="hyphen"/>
                        -dred dollars - two hundred dollars each <lb/>
                        and no more - to the payment of which <lb/>
                        sum well and truly to be made we <lb/>
                        bind ourselves our heirs executors and <lb/>
                        administrators firmly by these presents _
                    </p>
                    <p>The condition of this obligation is <lb/>
                        such that whereas.- <persName>N.D. Artist</persName> above <lb/>
                        named - has applied to the County Court <lb/>
                        of St Louis County - for a license - <unclear unit="word" quantity="1" rend="written"/> 
                  <lb/>
                        on the <date when="1843-05-03">third day of May 1843</date> - under a <lb/>
                        provision of an Act entitled "an Act more <lb/>
                        effectually to prevent free persons of color <lb/>
                        from entering into this State and for other <lb/>
                        purposes" approved <date when="1843-02-23">Feb 23-1843</date>- Now if <lb/>
                        the said <persName>Artist</persName> shall be of good behavior <lb/>
                        as required by said act then this bond <lb/>
                        shall be void otherwise shall remain <lb/>
                        in full force and virute - as witness our <lb/>
                        hands and seals this <date when="1843-05-06">6<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of May 1843</date>
