                    <p>Know all men by these presents that I <persName>Nancy Legen</persName> as <lb/>
                        principal a free woman of color and <persName>John Calvert</persName> 
                  <lb/>
                        as security are held and firmly bound unto the State of <lb/>
                        <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> in the just and full sum of two hundred _ <lb/>
                        Dollars for the payment of which well &amp; truly to be <lb/>
                        made for said sum of money we bind ourselves and <lb/>
                        each of our heirs executors administrators &amp; <choice>
                     <orig>afsigns</orig>
                     
                  </choice> 
                  <lb/>
                        jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed <lb/>
                        with our seals and dated this <date when="1843-05-03">third day of May in <lb/>
                        the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three</date>. _
                    </p>
                    <p>The condition of the above obligation is such that <lb/>
                        whereas the said <persName>Nancy Legen</persName> has this day obtained <lb/>
                        from the County of St Louis a license to remain in the <lb/>
                        State of <choice>
                     <orig>Mifsouri</orig>
                     
                  </choice> under an Act entitled "An act to <lb/>
                        prevent free persons of color from entering into <lb/>
                        said state and for other purposes Now if the siad <lb/>
                        <persName>Nancy Legen</persName> shall be of good behavior during the <lb/>
                        continuance of said license then the above obligation <lb/>
                        to be void else to remain in full force &amp; virtue
                    </p>
                    <p>In testimoney whereof the said <persName>Nancy Legen</persName> &amp; <persName>John <lb/>
                        Calvert</persName> have here unto set their hands &amp; offered <lb/>
                        their seals_
